In the interest of getting things started, I'll go first. I primarily have five methods: • Learn-Thai-Podcast.com's Premier Course • The Manee books • Byki.com • Asking my wife, 'How do I say.?' • A weekly Thai language class with a monk at the local Thai temple Whatever I am studying I always have a notebook and dictionary handy. Every word I come across that I don't know gets written down in the notebook so I can practice writing it and saying it out loud several times. I usually write them out about 10 times each. The Byki program is SRS, so that gives me the ability to practice new words in a quiz-like fashion.

If I get a wrong answer during the quizzes, I will write the word down 10 more times and then keep going. For the LTP course, I have the lessons on my iPod. Every day to and from work I watch the videos and transcribe everything into a notebook. This not only helps me with vocabulary, but also gives me a reference book that I can skim through when I want to remember something (rather than try to skip through a bunch of videos on my iPod). Asking my wife is quite obvious, as is the language class at the temple. I also created a system for Flashcards. Admittedly, I haven't kept up with them very well, but if you're interested in seeing how I create them you can read my blog entry: Anyone else feel like contributing?

Thai for Intermediates. Then started studying with an on line teacher (Narisa Naropakorn).

One tool that I have used for flashcards is jMemorize a free program. I have all of the words, coversations and sentences of Thai for Beginners programmed and some of Thai for Intermediates. When using flash cards I write the words out in Thai to practice the spelling (a lot of trees have died because of this method ). I would be happy to share those files with anyone who is interested. Just send me a private email. I don't live in Thailand so am at a disadvantage when it comes to everyday exposure.

I visted for 2 weeks in Dec. 2008 and my ability and confidence grew exponentially. So visiting or living in Thailand or having a native speaker around would be a great asset. Khun Josh, let me add a very minor tip, highly likely not adressed to you but for the very beginner, or the tourist who wants to learn quickly sentences such as how are you, in which hotel you are staying, or the numbers etc. I made quite good experiences with the, which is share ware with 5 free lessons (the feature comes with sound files, female and male speaker can be selected). There is a 'mirror program' available, called. With this my wife made her first steps with learning German, not adressed to the English speaking visitors, but I mention this since we made good experiences also with this 'mirror program' My steps in learning Thai are very comparable with those described by Khun John, including, who I only can recommend. I stopped lesson via skype since I think a sort of crash course in Bangkok, face to face, once I need to speak Thai in Thailand, is for my very specific means the better solution. But again, I would like to recommend lessons via Skype offered from.
